Taking guard with a broken helmet, Mathews was sent back to the pavilion before he faced a single ball, leaving him dumbfounded. The appeal was approved by the on-field umpire Jaikishan Menon.
Mathews was visibly distressed by the call and was in discussions with the Bangladesh team and the umpires but no matter his displeasure the call was upheld and he had to return to the pavilion in dismay.
